Born in Accra, Ghana, King Promise is one of the most important voices on the Ghanaian Afrobeat scene. Inspired by a broad range of sounds, King Promise sonically pulls from various genres from afrobeat, amapiano and drill. Fresh off the success of his previous single ‘Slow Down’ which has racked up more than one million views on Youtube. King Promise has now revealed his latest track, entitled ‘Ring My Line,’ a summer Afrobeat banger featuring UK rapper Headie One.
The track is driven by a smooth, luxurious instrumental with afrobeat percussion laced throughout and a lowkey, relaxed drum rhythm creating a mesmerizing, feel-good sound. Vocally, King Promise provides an engaging performance as he croons throughout, lyrically stating not to call him unless it’s about money. Promise’s performance helps flesh out the sound of the track and flows within the instrumental perfectly.
The featuring artist, British-Ghanaian rapper Headie One also provides a strong performance on the track, ditching his usual harsh drill style for a smoother more relaxed flow, Headie rides the instrumental as if it was water, providing entertaining bars and punchlines throughout.
On the track, King Promise has said ‘“This song is one of the realest I ever wrote. It’s a big record & linking with Headie on this one was only right. Two Ghanaians making the motherland proud globally. Did it for the culture & made a bop!”
With Headie One also saying ‘“I linked up with King Promise in Ghana a few years ago and made amazing music and we’ve stayed connected ever since. I recently went back to Ghana and we shot sick visuals for Ring My Line. This is for the culture.”
The accompanying video, directed by First Films Worldwide represents the upbeat summer vibe of the track brilliantly, filmed on Ghana’s tropical coastline, with a mix of both digital and analogue footage, the video exudes positive vibes and helps to show off Ghana’s natural beauty.
Growing up Promise had a diverse musical upbringing with his father helping to shape his tastes, immersing him in everything from reggae to R&B to pop boy bands. But King Promise hasn’t always been making music, having only jumped into the music game after joining a friend’s impromptu studio session where his raw talent was made clear.
Captivating, engaging and endlessly-entertaining ‘Ring My Line’ is a perfect encapsulation of what makes King Promise such a popular face in Ghana’s afrobeat scene.
