Hailing from Tembisa in South Africa, Aymos is one of the country’s most popular new artists. Fresh off the back of an extremely successful year that has seen him collaborate on some of the biggest Amapiano tracks of 2020 such as, ‘Emcimbini’ with Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa. Aymos has now revealed his debut album, a 14-track offering full to the brim of high quality and engaging modern African sounds. The album opens with one of the lead singles entitled ‘Jemeni’ ft Focalistic, this track is carried by lush African drumming which creates a smooth, relaxed vibe, as Aymos and Focalistic both croon throughout the track, bouncing off each other vocally creating a multi-layered soundscape.
This track is followed by the second lead single, Ababuyanga, a more up-tempo track, this engaging, percussion-soaked banger captures your attention through its textured instrumental laced with drums and keys. These perfectly complement Aymos’s vocals as her voice weaves within the instrumental arrangements creating a captivating sound.
‘Yimi Lo’ is full of soulful Afropop, house and Amapiano soundscapes, with production provided by Kabza De Small, and South African DJ heavyweights Major League DJz, Josiah De Disciple, DBN Gogo and high-quality features from various vocalists and rappers such as Sekiwe and Boohle, Focalistic and Zakes Bantwini.
On the album and its creation, Aymos has said “The music on this album is inspired by my years so far in the industry and all the ups and downs I experienced to get here. When ‘Emcimbini’ dropped, I faced many obstacles that caused me to consider quitting music or trying to be someone I wasn’t. Holding on to who I am, and my values are what this album is about. I appreciate human beauty and accept individuals for who they are. Nobody has to change anything about themselves if they don’t want to. My album embraces love, warmth, and the spirit of Ubuntu, and of course good vibes!”
Lyrically throughout the album, Aymos provides a deeply personal approach, covering various topics such as love and heartbreak on ‘Risasekile’ but also takes a more tongue and cheek approach on ‘Lyf Styl’, and ‘Amapaperbag’ which help to show off Yimi Lo’s versatility.
Whilst growing up in Tembisa, a township in South Africa, Aymos started singing in church, slowly honing his skills as a composer and artist. Starting out as a backing vocalist and session musician, Aymos has had a broad musical journey whilst on his route to becoming one of South Africa’s most popular new Amapiano stars, which has led him to receive two nominations at the South African Music Awards as well as over 20 million streams online.
