Growing up in the heart of urban culture, I was surrounded by the pulsating beats and raw poetry of hip hop. From the moment I first heard it, I knew that music would be my life’s calling. Inspired by the likes of Boondox, Twiztid, and Lupe Fiasco, I embarked on a journey to find my own unique voice in the world of hip hop.
Before I ever stepped onto the stage as JAY-D, I immersed myself in the world of music production. Drawing inspiration from my favourite producer, J Dilla, I honed my skills behind the boards, crafting beats that echoed with raw emotion. It was during this time that the name JAY-D was born, a homage to the artist who had inspired me to pursue my dreams. As an artist, I’ve always strived to defy categorization. While hip hop may be my foundation, I’ve never been afraid to explore other musical genres, from metal to 80s classics. This willingness to break boundaries and push the limits of my creativity has become my greatest strength as an artist. But with creativity comes vulnerability, and I’ve faced my fair share of demons along the way. Mental health struggles have often threatened to derail my journey, making it difficult to network and perform at my best. Yet, through sheer determination and the support of my loved ones, I’ve learned to confront these challenges head-on, refusing to let them dictate the course of my life. For me, music is more than just a means of self-expression—it’s a lifeline. Whether I’m pouring my heart out on stage or laying down tracks in the studio, each song is a testament to the power of raw emotion. With my debut single, “Honest Living,” I invite listeners into my world, offering them a glimpse of the honesty and authenticity that defines my music.
As I look ahead to the next chapter of my musical journey, I see endless possibilities stretching out before me. In 10 years’ time, I envision myself sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in the industry, bringing my unique blend of hip hop and raw emotion to audiences around the world. And who knows? Perhaps one day I’ll even find myself on the lineup for Never Mind the Buzzcocks, a testament to just how far I’ve come.
