LIVE FROM PAPER DRESS VINTAGE
Photos and words – Olly Bromidge
Last week, two up and coming London based bands played a sell out show at vintage-shop-turned-venue, Paper Dress in Hackney. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation piling on for Gossip Queens’ on stage debut, playing their original tracks, with their signature, unapologetic sound, for the first time outside of the studio. Following their explosive performance were Gingerella, an outfit built on quintessentially English lyrics and bold guitar riffs. The poetry of Tommy’s words shines through in his unique vocal, carrying notes peppered with passion and authenticity.
The visual racket of the night was just as strong, with many familiar faces from across London’s music scene appearing, all outfitted in their best indie clobber. Stand out guests were Issey of The Molotovs, Blake of Safe At Any Speed, and Edwin of Tabac Rat, all dressed to the nines. Celebrating together Gossip Queens’ first show, the atmosphere was uplifting, congratulating their originality and visceral, impassioned art.
Both bands have exactly what you need in a fresh, new, live act – not just in looks but in sound too. Tommy of Gingerella and Atkin of Gossip Queens both share the vital ingredients for a frontman; they’re captivating to watch, playing with sounds and movement that demands the attention of more than just what the one hundred and twenty capacity venue could hold.
It’s safe to say that indie rock is alive and well in the hearts of London’s youth, evolving into a new sound full of vibrance and energy, yet still imbued with all the bells and whistles of what came before.
