Toronto-based RnB/Soul singer and songwriter UNA MIA speaks to ASBO magazine about her exciting musical escapades, including the release of her new EP named ‘AIRBOURNE’ – out today (28th June 2024), listen to the new EP here and watch the video for ‘Nothin’ here. Beautiful melodies make up the sounds of her craft, with truthful lyrics coming from the heart and pouring into her music. UNA MIA’s soft and satisfying vocals dance majestically over RnB beats, accompanied by smooth elements of soul and a hint of pop.
UNA MIA has learned to be open in life and her music, something she got from her mum, who encouraged “free-flowing communication”. She was also inspired by listening to soul music growing up, such as Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, with UNA particularly loving the emotion that comes through the music that she connects with it in a “raw and authentic way.”
UNA started her career by posting cover songs online before finding her confidence when she began to create music. She advises aspiring artists to “try something that you’ve always loved” and to “trust your gut and be around people who are passionate about you, who love your music and you as a person – surround yourself with good people”.
She says her creative process includes working with a small team of trusted individuals including producer and co-writers, as well as musicians to help create the beautiful backdrops to her songs. This process is something UNA loves, freestyling first and getting a “pocket for melody” with the songs stemming from there.
Once on stage, UNA feels “free”. She likes to push the boundaries of her vocal range, having studied classical singing growing up. From the beginning Una has been “absorbing different sounds, in particular loves Spanish, often covering Rosalia’s songs when performing live, saying “inspiration can be found through any culture”.
“Artistic expression has always been my escape and a way of connecting to who I am.”
UNA loves “depicting her art in different ways” including music videos. Her career highlight has been her appearance on Colors, the video can be found here. Having been a fan from a young age, walking in the footsteps of some of her favourite artists was a special moment for her.
UNA MIA has a debut headline show at the Drake Underground Toronto on October 4th, 2024 and is performing at the Corona Capital Festival 2024.
In 2024 she’s excited to travel, perform, and write more – and you can follow her journey here.
