New Music: Cinnamon curls Tom Misch

Words by Erin Heffernan Image by Charlotte Patmore

Tom Mischis a London born musician and producer having become famous in 2012 releasing homemade samples and mixes on SoundCloud. Following the release of “Insecure” last month, “Cinnamon Curls” has finally been released after four years. “Cinnamon Curls” was written and recorded four years ago but Misch “never found the right time to put it out”, “Cinnamon Curls” was co-written with Grammy-winning songwriter Jimmy Napes, multi-instrumentalist and producer Nate Mercereau and singer-songwriter Carmody. Now it’s finally out, here’s what I think.

As soon as “Cinnamon Curls” begins you are welcomed by a smooth, sweet guitar riff melting through your ears, it reminds me of lockdown with the rise of “indie” and over-saturated photos, which makes sense as that’s the time it was written and recorded but it makes me feel like I’m thirteen again.

After this riff is repeated a few times, you’re greeted with a deep soothing voice that brings the whole song together.

The lyrics reflect a yearning and a need for the girl with “Cinnamon Curls”, the imagery of the ocean and sunset shows the beauty of this girl and the yearning comes in when Misch sings “Emeralds and pearls, yeah they’re losing their shine, when I’m here without you”.

This single is great for those of you yearning for that one person as well as the sun.

Although if you were a young teenager during lockdown, be warned it may make you feel extremely nostalgic and may make you want to go back to cow print painted walls and bucket hats.
