ASBO Meets Kat Von D

Kat Von D is a multitalented, tattoo artist, TV personality and of course musician. The Mexico-born musician has released her brand new project titled ‘My Side of the Mountain’ today. Her brand of disco goth with heavy influences from sounds such as synth wave, post-punk and several different electronic sounds as well as being a female solo artist in such a male-dominated space makes her one of the most exciting and interesting artists in her field right now. Having already created a beauty empire, written multiple best-selling books and starred in hit TV shows, music is her first love and listeners will understand that when they listen to the way she pours her heart into her new project.

With ‘My Side of the Mountain’ out today, ASBO sat down with the talented songstress and asked her a few questions about herself, her music and everything in between.

As someone who has taken so many different paths in your career, what is it about music that is so important to you?

Out of all my artistic outlets, music is the one I’m most passionate about. I was classically trained in piano from the age of 5, so music was a secondary language for me in ways.

And now being able to translate experiences, thoughts and workout emotions for myself through music, it’s meant more to me than drawing or tattooing. Although I still hold those art forms dear to my heart.

What is the reasoning behind the album title ‘My Side of the Mountain’?

When I was a kid I read the 1959 novel ‘My Side Of The Mountain’ and related so deeply with the little boy in the book who ran away from home, only to find comfort in isolation, self-reflection, and self-reliance in the wilderness.

There’s a comfort in dreaming of escapism, sure. But this album isn’t about that. It’s about confronting the shit we don’t want to face, accepting the things we can’t control, and fighting for the things that matter.

Having been sober since 2007, how do you think it changed the way you approached things creatively?

It’s only made things better. There’s nothing worse than trying to give something you’re all and being hungover, that’s for sure!

But in all seriousness, the gift of sobriety only helps creativity, in a much less dysfunctional way than when I was high.

What is your favourite song on your new project and why?

I’m emotionally attached to all of them for different reasons. But I’d say that ‘Set Myself On Fire’ is my favourite track on the record.  I love the production as well as Ferras’ epic vocals on that one!  Plus that intro drives me wild!

Why should people listen to ‘My Side of the Mountain’?

‘My Side Of The Mountain’ is a love letter for all of the hopeless romantics, the outsiders, and lonely hearts trying to find their place in this cold and divisive world.

Kat Von Ds new projectMy Side of the Mountain’ is out now and can be listened to everywhere you get your music.
