At the heart of OMNISS, a brand that defies the conventional and embraces the visionary, lies the creative partnership of Asya Ter-Hovakimyan and Francisco Zhou. Together, they craft collections that transcend demographic boundaries, appealing not to specific genders but to the dreamers and bold spirits among us. Their latest collection, LOVESONG in FLIGHT, unveiled at London Fashion Week, was a mesmerizing symphony of art, culture, and music, steeped in heritage and a defiant sense of self-expression.

Chatting with Asya, I was immediately struck by her deep connection to her Armenian roots, which she seamlessly infuses into her work. “It’s not something I consciously hold onto,” she explained, “but it’s embedded in me.” This heritage, rich with handcrafted traditions, is evident in the intricate details of her pieces; many of which are still handmade in Armenia. The knitwear, for instance, is a testament to the enduring craft of her homeland, with 90% of the pieces in this collection knitted by Armenian artisans.

The collection itself was an ode to flight, both literal and metaphorical. Inspired by the elegance and defiance of bird species, it featured fluid, airy fabrics that ‘mimicked’ the delicacy of wings in motion. Symmetrical imagery of birds in love adorned many of the designs. Headpieces and masks, reminiscent of peacocks, added a touch of theatricality. The craftsmanship was exquisite, with fine embroidery and intricate draping that gave the garments an ethereal quality. Each piece seemed to glide down the runway, embodying freedom, power and grace.

Music, as it turns out, plays a pivotal role in Asya’s creative process. Her partner Sergei Istrati, a contemporary classical composer, performed the show’s score. His music subtly guiding the audience through the emotional narrative of the collection. Asya revealed that music and fashion are always intertwined for her, with each influencing the other in a seamless dance of inspiration. “There’s always a connection,” she said, “and music often shapes the mood and direction of my designs.”

This synergy between art forms was palpable during the show. The music’s shifting tempos and tones mirrored the evolution of the collection, from delicate and romantic to bold and assertive. Each garment seemed to have its own soundtrack, enhancing the emotional depth and storytelling inherent in Asya’s designs.

The personal connection between Asya and Francisco also fuels their creativity. While they often disagree, it’s this push-and-pull dynamic that sharpens their vision. “We’re not afraid to challenge each other,” Asya said, “and that’s what drives us to create something truly unique.” Their partnership, much like their designs, thrives on the tension between tradition and innovation, always striving for a balance between the two.

As LOVESONG in FLIGHT took its final bow, it became clear that this collection was not just about fashion. It was a celebration of love, freedom and the power of art to transcend boundaries. For Asya, staying true to her heritage and allowing it to inform her work comes naturally, an organic process that enriches her designs with depth and meaning.

Fashion, music and culture all find a home in OMNISS, where the past and present collide to create something truly timeless. As Asya continues to explore the intersections of these art forms, one thing is certain: her designs will always reflect the beauty and complexity of the world around her, anchored in heritage yet soaring toward the future.
