Zifei Wang’s Endless River collection at London Fashion Week was nothing short of breath taking. A masterful amalgamation of tradition, modernity and cultural dialogue. Hosted at the Waldorf Hilton, the setting felt grand and regal, a fitting backdrop for the designer’s debut on the London Fashion Week stage. As the show unfolded, the atmosphere shifted from delicate whispers of history to bold statements of futuristic elegance, all while maintaining a deep connection to the past.
Inspired by the Haihe River in Tianjin, China, Wang’s collection is a poetic tribute to her hometown’s industrial heritage and folk culture. The river serves as both a literal and metaphorical symbol in her work, embodying the flow of time, cultural exchange and the blending of East and West. As Wang explained, “It’s about the pollution from the culture to the industrial city… moss covered the industrial face, like some kind of cure.” This delicate balance between nature and industry is mirrored in the designs, with mossy greens, dark browns and metallic tones evoking a rustic yet urban landscape.
Wang’s ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques shines through in every piece. The collection features intricate hand-drawn patterns, patchwork and pleating, each garment telling a story of cultural preservation and transformation. The use of sustainable materials like bamboo fibre and Hua Luo silk not only emphasises Wang’s commitment to environmental responsibility but also roots her work in timeless artisanal practices.
The progression of the show felt cinematic, a journey through age and emotion. From the soft, earthy tones of the opening pieces to the striking yellow-and-black creations that came latterly in the show. Wang took the audience on a visual and auditory adventure. The shifts in music, from ominous, hooded silhouettes to bouncy, house-infused beats, reflected the collection’s evolving mood, culminating in a celebration of resilience and hope.
As Zifei Wang celebrates the tenth anniversary of her brand, Endless River stands as a powerful testament to her vision. It is not just a collection but a narrative of cultural fusion, history and a bold step into the future of fashion. Wang’s work transcends borders, inviting us to explore the harmonious coexistence of modernity and tradition through her eyes.
