1. Who are My First Time?
My First Time are sell outs.
2. For someone that is yet to discover you, how would you describe your music?
Sickly, slimy, sweet. A bit waspy, a bit unnerving, but all round charming and warming. A pop band trying to be a rock band also works.
3. How would you describe your creative process when it comes to making music?
Sit and wait for something to come out of your brain that you have no conscience is there. Creativity is something you have no awareness of, it kind of just comes out of nowhere. Like a burp that turns to sick. We’re advocates of the ‘throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks’ approach.
4. Who or what has inspired you most as artists?
Cake, Beck, The Streets, MARINA, Dizzee Rascal, Elastica.
5. What is your pre-show routine?
A beer. One more beer. Another beer. Look around for more beers. Drink another beer. Wipe sweat off our brows. I really shouldnt… “ok, i’ll have another beer. Woops! That was another two beers. And another beer. Sh*t, I’ve got to go on stage now.”
6. Where do you feel you fit into the musical landscape?
Somewhere between Britney Spears and Nirvana. We just wanna add a bit of chaos and noise to pop music.
7. What are your favourite music genres as a band? And are there any you dislike?
We all have a very collective taste in different things. I don’t think we like any genre more than others, but we definitely all appreciate a banging pop chorus. Pop rules. And country. And dance music.
8. Is there a story behind the band’s name?
Isaac wanted to come up with a name that was used in day-to-day language. You’d be surprised how often you say ‘My First Time’. Make a note of it. Now everytime you say or someone else says it, you’ll think of us. What a delight!
9. What would you say is your greatest strength as a band? And what is your biggest weakness?
Strength: Music
Weakness: Beers
10. What are you listening to right now?
Sharon Van Etten, Sonic Youth, The Hellp, Magdalena Bay.
11. Which music artists would you say have influenced your work the most?
‘Much Better’ was written after listening to a lot of LCD Soundsystem and playing with repetition and odd song structure. The current stuff we’re writing has influences from everyone from Yung Lean to Calvin Harris to Lady Gaga. Our influences change weekly; we’re all obsessed with crate digging the internet for new music and sounds.
12. Who would you most like to collaborate with artistically?
To make music – Danny Brown, Gorillaz, Paris Texas. We met Aidan Zamiri at a party and would love for him to direct a video. He’s amazing.
13. Worst performance?
Our first ever gig – one too many beers and sloppy playing.
14. Biggest obstacle & how did you overcome it?
At one of our gigs there was a power cut, so we ended up doing the rest of the set acapella. It was like something out of Pitch Perfect,.
15. Looking ahead to the rest of this year, what else can we expect?
A plethora of new songs, new sounds, and way more fun.
