Clifford Amponsah’s 2023 graduate collection, "AFRO FUTURE," serves as a vibrant, multi-dimensional exploration of identity that bridges his Ghanaian heritage with his personal evolution as a designer. By weaving together his history in football with the bold aesthetics of Afro-punk lifestyle and music, Amponsah creates a narrative that moves seamlessly between his past, present, and an imagined future. As a menswear knitwear specialist, he prioritizes a sense of radical uniqueness, achieved through a sophisticated "clash" of high-quality materials—such as ethereal mohair, structured cotton, and shimmering starlight yarns. His technical prowess is equally diverse, utilizing a blend of traditional hand-craft and industrial innovation; the collection features intricate macramé and domestic punch card (ferra) techniques alongside complex digital Photoshop patterns for Shima kintting machines and rhythmic ripples, checks, and two-colour blocks created on the Dubied machine. Through this fusion of cultural symbols and advanced textile engineering, Amponsah establishes a new visual language for menswear that feels both deeply personal and globally resonant.
