Review: Mayo’s Train Room Hits a New Gear with ‘Angels of the Underground’

W: Paul Jackson

Irish musician and producer Joe Monaghan, under the moniker Train Room, is set to unleash a "sonic wave" with his latest single, ‘Angels of the Underground’. Releasing 27th March, this self-produced lead track serves as a powerful precursor to his highly anticipated sophomore album, Station Road, arriving 3rd April.

Based in Mayo, Monaghan spent the last two years meticulously crafting a record that explores childhood and place. However, Station Road avoids the typical pitfalls of sentimentality. Instead, Monaghan treats memory as a physical texture, layering it directly into the atmosphere and tone of his arrangements to create a soundscape that feels both expansive and deeply personal.

‘Angels of the Underground’ captures this evolution perfectly, trading simple melodies for a dense, immersive experience. It is a confident return for a songwriter who continues to redefine the boundaries of his craft from the West of Ireland.
