Desert Queen Claims the Throne: Pearl Charles Brings Joshua Tree Magic to the UK

W: Peter James May I: @slg_photog

Fresh off the success of her latest album Desert Queen—which stormed the UK charts late last year—Pearl Charles is trading the California sun for a seven-date UK tour. The journey kicks off in Manchester on 29 April, promising a masterclass in West Coast "country disco" that has already captivated audiences across the Atlantic.

Based in the mystical landscape of Joshua Tree, Charles has curated a spellbinding sound that defies easy categorisation. By weaving together disco, funk, and rock ’n’ roll with deep-rooted country and folk influences, she delivers a brand of indie-pop that feels like "roots and suits" straight out of the 1970s, reimagined with a sharp, modern edge.

Her musical pedigree is as vibrant as her aesthetic. Growing up in the glamorous haze of Los Angeles and raised on a steady diet of American folk music, she picked up her first instrument at just five years old. Her career has since been a whirlwind of evolution, from forming the country duo The Driftwood Singers at 18 to touring as the drummer for garage rock outfit The Blank Tapes at 22.

Since the release of her self-titled debut EP in 2015, Charles has refined her songwriting into something truly unique. Don't miss the chance to catch this blend of cosmic country and dancefloor groove as she brings her West Coast spirit to British stages this spring
