Who are Girl Group?
We are a feminist five piece based in Liverpool, who make sick alt pop tunes xxx
For someone that is yet to discover you, how would you describe your music?
Genre bending but never too far from a hook, guitar-y, electronic, unapolagetic, girly, heavy topics wrapped in a bow.
What inspired you as a band?
What brought us together as friends and bandmates was a shared passion for feminism. We formed Girl Group as a response to the subtle misogyny that we'd experienced in uni and what we knew to exist in the industry as a whole, and still it's the things that we rant about to each other that always provide the most inspiration for songs.
What Is Your Pre-Show Routine?
Playing "hee-ha-hoo" - it's a theatre game (we're always only one step away from being a musical theatre troupe). It's meant to help you focus and shake off nerves. We also like dancing to funkytown then having a huddle and saying nice things to each other so we feel good going on stage.
Fun fact about the band?
Four of us are Norwegian and one of us is from Yorkshire. It's a weird mix but it works ha.
What are your favourite musical genres, and are there any you dislike?
Girl Group's favourite genres are probably electro-pop, singer/songwriter, indie and hyperpop. Don't think any of us are particularly fond of country or nu metal but also no shade ha.
Is there a story behind the band’s name?
We were trying to think of one and had some really ridiculous suggestions thrown in, then Katya suggested Girl Group. We had a bit of a laugh at the straightforwardness of it before realising that it was perfect. A big part of the concept for us as a band was subverting expectations of what girl groups are typically known to be. When people hear our name, they are met with their own preconceptions and stereotypes and so we love the fact that the name provides an opportunity for people to be faced with that.
What would you say is your greatest strength and weakness?
We'd like to say our greatest strength is our writing. We're all quite proud of the way we've presented the issues that we have through our music. Our greatest weakness is probably deciding on song structures. Certain songs can take us ages and we drive ourselves mad with making ten different versions, though I suppose it's probably part of the process.
What has challenged you in the industry?
Probably the lack of certainty. We feel we won the lottery being signed to boysboysboys, which is part of polydor - we're lucky enough to not have to work proper jobs while forging our music careers - but what comes with that is the fear that it might go away. This can result in an insecurity that at times has made its way into our work, but we are navigating it. The lack of certainty remains but now we've been doing it longer, we can feel ourselves growing in confidence. This project will always be ours and will continue no matter what happens.
What advice would you give to aspiring artists?
Don't allow lack of knowledge, skill or resources to stop you from making and releasing the art you want to make. Just start and figure it out. It doesn't matter if it's not what you want it to be at first. Starting and putting it out there will open the necessary doors to get it to where you want it to be.
Who would you most like to collaborate with artistically?
Charli XCX !!! She's a genius and an icon.
What music artists would you say have influenced your work?
The above (charli), Britney Spears, Wolf Alice, Julia Jacklin, Le Tigre, Wet Leg.
What song have you got on repeat right now?
Fuck My Computer by Ninajirachi
What is your creative process when making music?
We usually start by first thinking about either what kind of a sound we want to go for or what kind of topic. Because all five of us write the lyrics to each song, there's often LOTS of discussion to try to understand and agree on what the sentiment of the song is. From there we throw out ideas and build the song, often following the typical verse-chorus structure or whatever feels right if that doesn't apply. Maria will be at her computer producing and trying her best to recreate the noises we're shouting at her.
This year, what can we expect?
More music !!! Which is so exciting. And some really cool events and more gigs:)))
