Candide – The Theatrical Fever Dream of Progressive Punk

NEW SINGLE 'BREAK INTO MY HOUSE’ RELEASED 9th MAY 2026

W: Mandy Morgan

London’s music scene is rarely short of ambition, but few acts arrive with the sonic audacity and theatrical weight of Candide.. Formed in the summer of 2024 by friends Eddie, Jasper, and Milo, the trio has quickly established themselves as a monolithic force, operating less like a traditional band and more like an immersive, cacophonous theatre production.

When asked to describe their sound to the uninitiated, the band offers a tongue-in-cheek label: “Neolithic uncle spasm jazz.” Jokes aside, the reality is a far more compelling, high-octane collision. Their music is a juicy blend of the grotesque, self-indulgent spirit of 70s troglodyte rock, post-modern experimental noise, atonal classical, and the absolute worst excesses of noughties pop-punk.

It is a style they wield with precision. Their forthcoming single, ‘Break Into My House’ (out May 9th), is described by the band as a “sonic home invasion.” It features deranged saxophony, garage-guitar fireworks, and waterboard-style lyricism set against a wall synths. As the band puts it, these are “the melodies of a boy band exploding at Chernobyl; a car-crashing, ear-shattering cacophony for the modern world.”

The band’s name is drawn directly from Voltaire’s satirical masterpiece. For the members of Candide, the novel’s final directive—“we must cultivate our garden”—resonates deeply. It serves as a grounded philosophy for navigating the perils of the modern music industry: stop chasing grand, unreachable answers and focus on living and creating in practical, tactile ways.

he band’s creative process is born from the quintessentially British atmosphere they inhabit. Rather than chasing the glamour of a villa in the south of France, they embrace the misery of English rain, bleak, window-pained views, and the sulphuric smell of the M25.

This ethos extends to their pre-show rituals, which involve operatic vocal exercises performed in the “bog,” accompanied by a hybrid of aerobics and minimalist yoga. As for "Diva Demands," the band remains characteristically grounded: “Our phantom Diva Demands are tough to accommodate when most venues won’t even give you a can of Red Stripe, to be fair.”

Following the release of ‘Break Into My House’, fans can expect a new EP later this year. The record was captured at RYP Studios in Rayners Lane with producer Michael Smith (known for his work with Wolf Alice and Anteros). According to the band, the recording process involved a delicate balance between “incessant Wetherspoons trips” and the hard work required to craft five sharp, studied rock-and-roll tracks.

Candide has already begun to turn heads. Admirers include Nicky Wire of the Manic Street Preachers, who simply stated, “Fucking great!!!”, and acclaimed producer Joshua Woolf, who praised them as “top musicians with witty lyrics and volatile songs.”

Whether through their “gorilla gigs”—which drag audiences into a sweat-soaked frenzy of noise and hooks—or their surreal visual universe where Shakespeare rises from the dead to rap, Candide is firmly cementing themselves as one of the capital's most original new acts.

While Candide maintains an active digital presence, they are a band that truly lives in the moment—their online footprint is designed to act as a teasing, slightly surreal portal into their world rather than a brain-rot landfill
