Let’s hear it for Sorry Ghost, the 4-piece LA indie-rock band that I had the pleasure to sit down with and chat about all things music. Their latest track, ‘inside voice’, instantly stood out for its unique melodies, a true feast for the ears. Sorry Ghost possesses that ‘something special’, the kind of quality that keeps you coming back for more. Their energy matches their sound: Good vibes, light-hearted chats and humour. The love for what they do shines through their personalities, whilst their music reflects this passion. Sorry Ghost describe their sound in 4 words: “Dynamic, authentic, emo, but fun”. Melodic magazine dubbed them “Optimistic emo”, and they still hold this title with fondness.
Sorry Ghost came together serendipitously through their love of music and their friendship, which spans over years. The band comprises 4 musicians: Sean on guitar/vocals, Tate on drums, Daniel on bass/vocals, and Matthew on guitar. Their dynamic is wholesome, friendly, funny, and harmonious. You can hear it in the way their vocals twist together to form a tantalising treat. Musical inspirations for the band include Paramore, Turnstyle, Wet Leg, and the pop-punk/emo genres. To quote Sean, “It’s hard to take the emo out of the boys”
Sorry Ghost have been tight-knit for 3 years now. “There are so many creative people in LA that you are just continually inspired by other musicians”, says Matthew. Daniel speaks fondly on their journey, “We’re fortunate enough to be best friends, do this and have fun. It’s always been a dream.” The best part for them is the songwriting, the collaborative aspect, and working like “Puzzle pieces, or like salt and pepper”, as Sean describes.
Performing live is where it all comes to life. “We have a great energy on stage”, Tate says, “It’s just fun doing the actual thing we all started doing music for”. Daniel agrees, “When we connect with someone and it resonates, it’s so rewarding”. Creating music is where the band's strengths coincide and burst into “Creative wellsprings”, as Matthew puts it. The melodies set them apart, and “It just clicks”, says Tate.
Sorry Ghost headlined in LA at the Moroccan Lounge venue. “Rows of people were singing our lyrics back to us - it was surreal”, Daniel fondly reminisced. Tate dreams of drumming at the iconic Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, where many acts he admires have performed. The band would also love to collaborate with Wet Leg, The Strokes, Annie Dirusso, Phoebe Bridges and even Skrillex.
Speaking on challenges in the industry, Daniel warns of the “High highs and low lows” that come with being in a band. His advice, however, is: “Keep going. I truly believe that eventually, for any artist, something will start to resonate with someone”. Sean highlights the difficulty in content production on social media. “It’s a lot of fun - but sometimes things don't go the way you planned. We’re very good at not letting the numbers get to us”, a skill that had been honed through their obvious faith in the art they create. “Separate the art from the content, and learn from mistakes,” echoes Daniel.
Expect more music from the group this year - with no plans of slowing down. The new ‘no disdain’ track is streaming as you read this, and they want to release a cowboy-themed western music video in the near future (yeehaw!)Let’s hear it for Sorry Ghost, the 4-piece LA indie-rock band that I had the pleasure to sit down with and chat about all things music. Catch them on tour this summer and autumn (or fall, if you happen to be in the US) and after badgering them to visit the UK, you’ll likely see them perform here soon as their band grows and flourishes in the years ahead. Don’t be a ghost, and listen to Sorry Ghost now.
