Hollows are a 3 piece Alternative Rock band based in Manchester. The band met in the city and formed the current line up in mid 2021. Since then, releasing a series of singles which have met with support from BBC Radio 6’s Steve Lamacq, Radio X’s John Kennedy, BBC Introducing, XS Manchester and editorial playlists on Apple Music.
Frontman Sean Davies believes that the current line-up of Dan Dyson on drums and Jack Barnes on bass has finally given the band an identity and a sound they can be proud of. Hollows are looking forward to releasing new music in 2023 after a second sell out show in their home city, support slots for the likes of Space and Peter Hook and The Light and a summer tour under their belts. The band are now signed to Revolver Records.
1. For someone that is yet to discover Hollows in 5 words how would you describe yourself.
Raw, Energetic, Angsty, Alt-Rock
2. What inspired you as an artist?
All of our own favourite artists really got us into playing music for a start such as The Cure, Joy Division, Radiohead and Kings of Leon. Our songs though are inspired by what we experience in our day to day lives.
3. What is your process for preparing to perform live? Do you have any Diva demands? Who’s the Mariah Carey of the group?
We’re a simple bunch. Chuck us some meal deals and beers, we’ll be happy. Jack can a diva though, organic only for him.
4. Where do you feel you fit into the music landscape?
This is something we’ve struggled with. We can play gigs with Indie bands where we will be the heaviest band there by far and then play some alongside punk bands where we don’t quite fit either. We like to think we’re paving our own way right now.
5: What are your favourite musical genres, and are there any you dislike?
Between the 3 of us we reckon we cover quite a variety. Sean is really into his post-punk & early 00s Indie. Jack more his Rock & Indie bands whereas Dan loves Hip-hop and metal. Makes for some interesting car rides
6. What’s currently in the pipeline for 2024?
We’ve just returned from playing in America for the first time which was amazing but the rest of the year is equally as exciting. We have some shows in early summer that are yet to be announced but we’re really excited about. We also have a new EP coming out in July which will have a couple singles released beforehand so stay tuned for those!
7 What would you say is your greatest strength as an Artist?
Staying true to who we are and what we want to write. It’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole and try to write songs that may be considered more radio friendly or generic but we try to push ourselves with every release.
8. What would you say is your greatest weakness as an Artist?
Gigging as much as we’d like. Not sure if that counts really but we’d do it everyday if we could!
9. What can fans expect from your new single ‘TALONS’
The start of something new. We think we’re really starting to settle into what kind of band we want to be, the direction we want to go in and this is the start of that
10. What music artiest would you say have influenced your work?
The Cure, Kings of Leon, Radiohead, The Strokes
11. Who would you most like to collaborate with artistically?
Dan and Sean have always joked about what kind of song we could write with Pendulum! It would also be great to have a song with Joe Talbot on from Idles, what a voice!
12. What was your worst performance?
Probably one of the ones we just did in America. Dan’s kick pedal broke on the first song so it was a whole set with no bass drum. It was proper jarring.
13: What was the most difficult obstacle you have ever faced and how did you overcome it?
Figuring out who or what Hollows is. We’ve had members come and go, been in different bands etc. It’s taken us a long time to get to what we are now but I guess just having that desire to keep going and belief that we can do this is what kept us going to where we are now.
14: What is your creative process when making music. Do you work with others or is there just you?
Usually just the 3 of us getting in a room and developing ideas one or two of us have come up with at home. Sometimes it works out great and it’s how we wrote Talons amongst many of the new tracks we have written.
15 Where do you see your musical career in 10 years?
Doing this full-time and it being our actual careers that can have our full attention. Being able to play venues across the country/world and have people paying to see us, would be great.
