Hollows : History

Words by Marc Todd

Hollows are back. Raw, angsty, driven and ablaze with energy. Having recently returned from their US tour and back into the studio, they have released their first single of 2024- ‘History’.

This is the 11th track from the Manchester trio, which tackles themes of violence and abuse, resonating with many listeners. It has all the makings of a classic track with personable lyrics, anthemic choruses and catchy melodies. Influences are apparent to hear from the 1980’s US indie scene to early 2000’s rock. The song paints the picture of a troubled love affair , but twisted round from another perspective. You might like to listen to this track in the early hours over a glass of double whiskey, coke and ice. Front man Sean Davies sings “I used to love your legs , till they tried to kick me down the stairs”, with raspy vocals that make you believe every word he sings. The swelling, driving bass from Jack Barnes accompanies the pounding drums from Dan Dyson. It all fits together and works seamlessly  like the well oiled machine that they now are. So if you’re a fan of Radiohead mixed with The Cure and a bit of Stereophonics then this is for you. All in all, this well seasoned alt-rock band that clearly demonstrates how fine tuned and evolved their songwriting is. It is clear this band is trying to push themselves with every release. Keep an eye out for the rest of the EP- you wouldn’t want to miss it!
