GREENHAT: NO BULLSHIT, NO BUDGET, ALL SOUL

"It’s DIY alt rock recorded from a South London bedroom by one person. But I’m the only person on Earth who knows what’s yet to come."

Every moniker has a story, but GREENHAT’s starts beneath the boards of a London drum shop. Named by Bhalla—owner of Ocean Studios, directly beneath GREENHAT’s old workplace, Drumshack—the name originally tagged a head of dyed hair (and at times, a nod to pothead culture).

Today, it’s the vehicle for a raw, unapologetic South London sound.

"GREENHAT is a reminder that this is all a performance requiring many hats," he explains. "It’s a way to always incorporate truth, while remembering I don’t have to give away all my secrets."

GREENHAT is Dylan Hyatt Bowles—a South London musician recording DIY alt-rock straight out of his bedroom.

Describing the sound isn't straightforward, and that is entirely by design. While currently rooted in bedroom-recorded DIY alt-rock, GREENHAT is hesitant to have the project wrapped up in a rigid genre box. With a live debut set for his 25th birthday on 8th August at the New Cross Inn, the focus is shifting to stage readiness. Past pre-show rituals of Jack Daniel's and heavy hash have given way to six months of sobriety, vocal warm-ups, breathing exercises, and a couple of nervous cigarettes—though diva demands like green M&Ms are still off the table.

“If I can subvert the guitar-led music scene away from fawning over another Wunderhorse or Fontaines D.C. rip-off, I’ll be more than happy.”

When it comes to the current UK music landscape, GREENHAT has no intention of fitting in neatly. The goal isn't to replicate the established post-punk or indie circuit, but to offer an authentic alternative. That drive for independence is both the project's greatest strength and its greatest weakness: everything is done entirely solo. From songwriting and production to acting as Creative Director, PR, promoter, and record label, it’s a constant juggling act between managing the administrative side and living enough life to inspire the next song.

Musically and philosophically, the project attempts to draw heavily on Killing Joke—specifically the band's contrasting personalities and chaotic history. Navigating personal loss and self-reflection has fed directly into a strong sense of self-reliance. For now, the focus is on proving what can be achieved independently, though future plans include opening up the project to more collaborations, EPs, and full-length albums alongside the partner of his production side hustle, Guy Fenegan.

“First impressions are said to count, but the longer you get to know someone, the more open you are to being surprised.”

The release of the debut single, ‘I’S OPEN’, marks the start of a public rollout after a long period of quiet isolation. It’s the first step in a larger journey, offering listeners a window into a project that is being built and refined in real-time. For GREENHAT, getting the single out into the world is just the beginning—and the rest will follow
