At the FJU Talents showcase during London Fashion Week, Shun An Chen emerged as a standout with their powerful and evocative pieces. Titled Black Sheep, the collection explores themes of conflict, societal rejection and self-transformation. Drawing inspiration from roots in Myanmar, Shun An Chen seamlessly fused cultural and personal elements into a bold statement on individuality and resilience.

In a conversation after the show, Shun An Chen shared the deeper meaning behind the Black Sheep theme. “I want to shine a light on conflict and war, and how people are often seen as outsiders when they undergo personal transformation,” they explained. “People may see you as the black sheep, but it’s important to embrace your true self, no matter what others think.” This defiance and self-awareness are central to the collection, which speaks to anyone who’s ever felt like an outsider in a world that often pressures conformity.

The show was a dynamic spectacle, set to a dark and driving beat created by a DJ collaborator and friend of Shun An Chen’s. The fast-paced, dominant sound underscored the power of the garments themselves. With a palette dominated by white, the designs featured a smart flowing look with intricate details and a commanding presence that embodied the energy of breaking away from societal norms. The concept of awakening from despair and delving into self-exploration was woven into every piece, generating an aura of empowerment and defiance.

Shun An Chen’s approach is deeply personal, and they are determined to infuse their collections with meaning. Their brand, “Rotten Strawberry,” takes inspiration from a Taiwanese term used to describe the current generation as delicate or unable to handle pressure. But, as Shun An Chen pointed out, the black sheep and the “strawberry generation” are both symbols of resilience. “I know what I’m doing,” they said confidently, embracing the criticism and turning it into strength.
