Who is ‘ Alex Kolo ’
Alex Kolo is a passionate music aficionado turned indie pop singer/songwriter. Her music
is a vibrant blend of influences from various genres and languages. Having recently
completed her second study abroad program in Germany, Kolo’s fluency in German and
Dutch infuses her music with a unique global perspective.
For someone that is yet to discover you, how would you describe your music?
I would describe my music as alternative, raw, and vulnerable.
What inspired you as an artist?
I found myself to be inspired by artists such as Alice Merton who are extremely original and honest in their writing because those artists are the ones whose songs really touch people.
What is your process for preparing to perform live? Do you have any Diva demands?
Before performing, I always like to do deep breathing exercises to ease my nerves. In terms of Diva demands, I always need to have a specific brand of bottled water.
Where do you feel you fit into the music ?
I am on my journey of figuring out where exactly I fit into the music, considering how new
to the industry I am.
What are your favourite musical genres, and are there any you dislike?
My favorite musical genres are pop and indie pop. I have an appreciation for every genre of
music, but I personally wouldn’t listen to opera.
Is there a story behind your new EP ‘In Circles’ ?
My latest release, “In Circles”, which was a bonus track on my EP, “Maybe One Day”, is about my experience living with anxiety and the constant internal criticism I have to grapple with.
What would you say is your greatest strength as an artist?
My greatest strength as an artist is the level of true passion I have for my craft as well as
my resilient personality.
What would you say is your greatest weakness as an artist?
My greatest weakness as an artist is my lack of instrumental expertise
What can fans expect from your new EP ‘ In Circles ‘
Fans can expect to indulge in a story of unrequited love that they might just know all too
well.
What music artist would you say has influenced your work?
Alice Merton.
Who would you most like to collaborate with artistically?
It would be my dream to collaborate with Alice Merton because her songwriting gave me
the courage to write about my experiences without holding back and not fear what people
would think about my work.
What was your worst performance?
My worst performance was when I was about 15 and forgot the words to my song on stage
at a local singing competition.
What was the most difficult obstacle you have ever faced and how did you overcome it?
The biggest obstacle I had to face was having to take this year off of recording new music due to some mental health challenges. I was able to overcome this obstacle and get back to the life I love by being patient and compassionate with myself.
What is your creative process when making music? Do you work with others or is it just you?
I usually come up with a solid foundation for a song and then I always partner with a
co-writer to solidify the piece.
Where do you see your musical career in 10 years?
I hope to have a few hit songs as well as have made a positive social impact in 10 years.
Your Top 3 Overrated Musicians, who when you hear them you think ‘ How The Fk………….. ?
I don’t think that … I think “wow, go them.” But I’m not going to answer because I’d rather focus my energy on lifting up rather than tearing down.
