latest single ‘A-Rated Horror Movies’ is out everywhere
1.Who is ‘ Bug Eyed ’
Charlie & Blue: Bug Eyed to us is about exploring emotions through storytelling, emotions that young generations experience. And really, we’re just trying to feel things through making songs.
2. For someone that is yet to discover you, how would you describe your music?
Charlie: Our music is an adventure of storytelling with hard hitting lyrics and intense sonics.
Blue: It’s immersive, emotive, and introspective. Like a super real dream that sometimes you want to wake up from but most of the time you really don’t.
3. What inspired you as an artist?
Charlie: I think for me there’s no better feeling than making something you feel proud of and that you believe in, and I’d constantly chase that feeling.
Blue: Human emotions and trying to make sense of thoughts, growing up, the complexities of love, life, poetry, people, fantasy and real life.
4. What is your process for preparing to perform live? Do you have any Diva demands?
Charlie: I get really nervous but I try to turn that into excitement. I would put on some hype music that gets me going.
Blue: I try to immerse myself in the mood of the set. I start with spending a little time
alone and then be with the band for the last 5 min before we go on, to feel connected
as a band.
5. Where do you feel you fit into the music ?
Charlie: I’d say the more on the chordal side of things, I love weird tones and absurd
sounding pedals.
Blue: Somewhere on the fringes, blending styles to create something raw and that
people hopefully connect with on a personal level.
6: What are your favourite musical genres, and are there any you dislike?
Charlie: I like mostly alt pop. I’d say anything that I do like takes me a while to get into. It takes me some time to realise why I like an artist or a band.
Blue: It’s a broad spectrum but I feel like as a pair we love the energy of punk, the storytelling of folk, the moodiness of grudge and find calm and excitement in jazz. And just anything with a good story really.
7. Is there a story behind the bands name?
Charlie: I think we had a massive list of ideas but Blue said ‘Bug Eyed’ and we loved
it immediately so it stuck.
Blue: Char really didn’t want us to be called ‘Green Leaf’. I can see why now.
8. What would you say is your greatest strength as an artist?
Obsession and attention to detail. And I think we take a lot of pride in our live set.
9. What would you say is your greatest weakness as an artist?
Charlie: I suck at deadlines haha
Blue: Getting lost in the depths of our own ideas. We can end up losing our minds in
the studio on certain nights.
10. What can fans expect from your new single ‘‘ A Rated Horror Movies ‘
Listeners can expect something haunting and nostalgic. It’s got this 80’s vibe that crescendos into this distorted, intense feeling.
11. What music artist would you say have influenced your work?
Charlie: Frank ocean, Dominic Fike, Lola Young, Bakar and Steve Lacy are big influences
Blue: Blur, Frank Ocean, Bon Iver especially the album ‘22, A Million’, Amy Winehouse, Kae Tempest, Arctic Monkeys, Dominick Fike, The Pixies.
12. Who would you most like to collaborate with artistically?
Charlie: I’d love to hear us on a track with either Bakar or Lola Young as I think we
could make something very special.
Blue: Frank Ocean! but then make something thrashy and just have massive crazy
highs and super intimate lows.
13. What was your worst performance?
Charlie: Recently at a show in Paris, I hit this complete bum note and I was in my head for the rest of the show. I enjoyed the show towards the end of the set but that
threw me off for a bit.
Blue: In the year we first met, me and Char played this show in Camden and Char didn’t clock it was a metal night when he booked it. The people there were not fans of what we were doing, we got heckled and a street bin was launched at us. All you can do is laugh at that point loool
14: What was the most difficult obstacle you have ever faced and how did you overcome it?
Charlie: I hate flying, so touring was quite difficult for me to get over that fear. It’s still a massive fear but I’m getting better at it.
Blue: I’d say there’s been times where the songs have eaten us alive because we’re
so invested creatively and emotionally, and I think we’re still learning how to separate
the creative process of taking yourself to those places and the current realities.
15: What is your creative process when making music. Do you work with others or is there just you?
Charlie: Blue and I usually try to go to the studio with an idea to work on. Either Blue
comes with a verse and some chords, or I would bring in some chords and we work
on it with our producer.
Blue: We would create vivid worlds that songs can live in with mood boards and
writing endless notes and then get creating in the studio. We make lots of the music
with our friends which keeps things feeling natural
16: Where do you see your musical career in 10 years?
Charlie: I mean, hopefully we’d be headlining Glastonbury for the 3rd time or something haha
Blue: Endless creative adventure, still just hanging out making music with friends but
playing shows to so many more people than right now.
