THE ART OF SELF-PACKAGING: YUI KAO’s LFW DEBUT

W: Blair Day I: @eiahopkinson

YUI Kao’s graduate collection Impulse Lover delivers a sharp, unapologetic critique of contemporary dating culture, framing romantic self-presentation through the lens of commercial products packaged for fast consumption. Emerging from Fu Jen Catholic University, Kao translates the transactional nature of modern intimacy into a vivid visual language where humor, pop art, and queer expression collide.

The collection plays heavily with physical proportion to challenge binary body expectations. Oversized, genderless silhouettes obscure traditional anatomical outlines, while structured cord corsets act as a conceptual counterweight. Functioning simultaneously as structural design and metaphor, the corsetry visually references the restraint, shaping, and discomfort often endured to meet modern standards of desirability.

Materially, Impulse Lover draws directly from everyday commercialism and Taiwanese pop culture, turning banal objects into high-camp statements. Taiwanese snack packaging, heart-shaped charms, and voluminous layers of vivid red tulle collide to subvert traditional romantic clichés. The hyper-saturated color palette demands immediate attention, mimicking fast-food and retail signage designed to trigger instant impulse buying.

Rather than leaning into passive sentimentality, Kao leverages visual overload and camp sensibilities to construct an inclusive, queer-forward space. The deliberate juxtaposition of hyper-feminine tulle, industrial cordage, and everyday street-snack graphics refuses neat categorization. Through humor, provocation, and visual excess, Impulse Lover establishes YUI Kao as a distinct new voice capable of pairing rigorous conceptual critique with exuberant, wearable theater.
