A Journey of Art, Music, and Identity
Theo’s journey into the world of music and creativity began long before the inception of LetHimCook. Growing up with a Franco-Vietnamese heritage, Theo’s early exposure to a vast array of musical influences shaped his approach to artistry. “My father, a fan of Daft Punk and Kavinsky, and my mother, a lover of disco and K-pop, often argued over what music to play,” he recalls. This musical dichotomy, coupled with the rise of EDM during his formative years, fuelled Theo’s broad appreciation for the diverse sounds featured on LetHimCook. From techno to house to hip-hop, the platform celebrates music that defies easy categorisation.
The Birth of LetHimCook
The concept behind LetHimCook is deeply personal, born from Theo’s relationship with his Vietnamese grandmother, a passionate cook who played a pivotal role in his life. “I wanted to create a space that resonated with her, cooking while integrating my passion for music,” he explains. His grandmother, who had hoped for Theo to pursue a career in medicine, struggled to understand his musical aspirations. Yet, through the platform, Theo managed to bridge that gap, showing her how music, like cooking, can be an art form that requires precision, passion and creativity.
The name is inspired by the English slang phrase let him cook, which brings bold urban energy to the platform. It’s all about giving artists the freedom to do their thing and shine. As Theo puts it, “It perfectly encapsulates the spirit of our radio…each DJ reveals their talent, their own sonic recipe, creating something extraordinary.”
A Culinary Approach to Sound
At LetHimCook, the experience of listening is akin to dining at a Michelin-star restaurant. The design is meticulous: DJs craft their sets like chefs design a menu, starting with an appetizer, progressing through a main course and ending with a dessert. A signature cocktail often accompanies the experience, completing the sensory journey. For Theo, the connection between food and music is clear. “Music and cooking share similarities: a structure, a spirit of sharing and countless hours of dedication to achieve perfection.”
Sets are carefully constructed to build intensity and allow moments of respite, much like a well-composed meal. Just as a dish can be spoiled by a missing ingredient, a DJ set requires every track selected to be perfectly placed. “It’s the interplay of high-energy moments and quieter interludes that makes every performance unforgettable,” Theo reflects.
Building the Vision
Officially launched in August 2024, the idea for LetHimCook had been brewing for years. While the process of establishing the radio station was smooth, securing a kitchen to host the project posed a challenge. However, the enthusiasm that followed exceeded expectations. “We’ve received incredible support and numerous requests from artists and chefs eager to collaborate,” Theo says. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”
Among the many standout moments, Theo points to a set by Mara that left a lasting impression. Her electrifying performance, especially her ability to unite the crowd with Drum & Bass, was transformative. “I wasn’t particularly drawn to DnB before that day, but her set completely changed my perspective,” he admits. This spontaneous energy is what sets LetHimCook apart; the authenticity and dedication to showcasing unfiltered talent.
A Global Dream
Looking ahead, Theo envisions expanding LetHimCook beyond its base in Marseille, hosting special editions in cities across the globe. The goal is to continue offering a platform that highlights musical and culinary diversity. “In five years, I hope to see more artists joining us, creating unique experiences that blend music and gastronomy.”
