ASBO caught up with the indie-pop duo remote, who keep going from strength to strength in their musical journey. They are full of passion and promise, and their lyrics stem from personal truth.
Recently, they hosted an intimate release party to promote their new song ‘Household Name,’ taking a step back from their previous concept album and trying something new. Indie pop elements still comprise the sound, with Alex’s passionate vocals set against a variety of movements within the music. “Household name is a track about imagining what it would be like to be a famous person”, Alex states. “Imagining a world of fame and fortune, which is almost like an escape from the ordinary”, he elaborates. “It also explores how we should be happy in the ordinary. So it’s kind of between the two”.
The juxtaposition of the idea of fame alongside the real, raw, and gritty makes this piece of music a journey in itself. “We like to imagine what it would be like to be famous, but also, we appreciate where we are right now”. Ruben chimes in, “We are super happy with where we are right now…but it would be super cool to be famous.” Their second release, ‘Five Thousand Miles,’ feels nostalgic yet new, and would be perfect to play mid-journey, where adventure is on the horizon. They speak out on the struggles of the music industry, “doing it ourselves is a big hurdle”, Ruben explains, “but that's the way we need to do it”. Alex goes on to explain how rewarding it is to do it yourself. So, advice to aspiring artists would be to believe in your own strengths to do it yourself, and do it proudly!
Right now, Ruben is listening to old school Role Model, and Alex is listening to Conen Gray - appreciating his songwriting. Their inspirations are wide, but the lyrics and production are where they get their inspiration. They speak to their audiences based on what they are going through in each season.
