Cambridge singer-songwriter, Sean Trelford, gets performative on his EP ‘Ulcer’.

Cambridge-born singer-songwriter Sean Trelford has officially entered the scene with his debut EP, ‘Ulcer’. A raw collection of five tracks, the project serves as a time capsule of Trelford’s formative years, written and recorded between the ages of 16 and 18.

Now 19, Trelford reflects on the release with a sense of growth. "It is youthful and naïve," he explains, "a stepping stone for a more intricate colour and beauty I am desperately searching for as I make more music.

The EP’s title and themes lean into the discomfort of communication. Trelford describes ‘Ulcer’ as a concept piece centered on "the pain of speech" and the frustration of the unspoken. He notes that the songs explore "resentful feelings towards conflict that have failed only because of lacking conviction."
The EP features the recent single ‘Left Out’, a track that dives deep into the isolation of the teenage experience. The song was born from a period of personal struggle during Trelford’s school years.

"I was in a social circle in school that spread nasty things about me and I felt very isolated and lonely," Trelford shares. "I made this song as medicine for myself to deal with those feelings."

For Trelford, music acts as a vital outlet for a "scrupulous" mind. He acknowledges that his sensitivity—a trait he believes is common among indie musicians—can lead to overthinking unnecessary details. However, he finds balance by channeling that "excess of energy" into his craft.

‘Ulcer’ is available now via Adventure Recordings/Island Records on digital platforms and vinyl. Fans looking to catch the new material live can see Sean Trelford perform at The Lexington in London on January 15th.
