CLASS OF 2020: Melissa Valdés Duque: Stitching the Subconscious into Style

At 21, Melissa Valdés Duque is transforming the runway into a space for profound psychological reflection. A student at Colegiatura Colombiana, Melissa’s work transcends the purely aesthetic, using fashion as a visceral language to communicate the unspoken struggles of the human condition. Her latest collection is a courageous response to the isolation of the global pandemic, born from a moment of deep personal loss following the suicide of a close friend.

Through her evocative project, MENTAL VESTIGES, Melissa personifies the "internal monsters" birthed in the subconscious during confinement. By documenting seven intimate life stories from her own environment, she has given physical form to seven distinct psychological shadows: social isolation, collective panic, death, fear of physical contact, confinement, loneliness, and grief. Her designs serve as a protective armor for the body while simultaneously exposing the internal battles that many fought behind closed doors.

For Melissa, the threads of her garments are inextricably linked to the history of her home country. Her creative process is driven by an empathetic urge to inhabit the experiences of others, capturing the memories of Colombian conflict and local narratives within her textures. She rejects the "banal" side of fashion, instead viewing the medium as a powerful instrument of manual art that can preserve collective memory and challenge societal indifference.

Looking toward the future, Melissa aspires to build a personal brand that sits at the intersection of fashion and social reflection. Her goal is to move the "fibers of society" by taking her storytelling beyond the catwalk and across the globe. By transgressing traditional forms and materials, she aims to ensure that the stories she finds along her path—and the experiences of the Colombian people—are never forgotten, but rather worn as a testament to resilience.
