ONE TO WATC: Stitching the Past into the Future: The Nostalgic Design World of Lori Briggs

W: Polly Hall I: Jonny Carr

Lori Briggs’ design identity is a tapestry woven from the coastal landscapes of Pwllheli and the quiet charm of Shirebrook. Her childhood was defined by the rhythm of the North Wales coast—days spent at the beach, exploring the harbour by her grandad’s boat, and cycling through the countryside. These memories, coupled with a fascination for the "aged and interesting" objects her grandparents collected on their travels, sparked a lifelong curiosity for history. For Lori, looking backward is the most authentic way to move forward; every project she touches is an exploration of the past seen through a modern lens.

The move to Leeds Beckett University was a bold, "spur of the moment" leap from a secluded town into the heart of city life. What began as a desire for adventure and the social buzz of LBU evolved into a transformative academic journey. The degree proved to be a masterclass in resilience, balancing a twenty-hour weekend job with the relentless demands of a final collection solidified Lori's passion. Far from burning out, the pressure only confirmed her love for the craft, proving that her dedication to fashion is as durable as the vintage toys that inspired her.

Her final collection is a whimsical narration of these treasured memories—a story of a child running away from home in search of adventure. Drawing visual cues from the meticulous worlds of director Wes Anderson and illustrator Norman Rockwell, the collection offers a cinematic glimpse into a playful, nostalgic earlier life. This creative milestone was shared with a tight-knit studio community, where highlights like the Leeds 2023 Year of Culture photoshoot turned a rigorous final year into an unforgettable celebration of talent and friendship.

As Lori prepares to pivot toward a Master’s degree in menswear, she is taking a well-deserved sabbatical to create for herself—finally making the clothes she didn’t have time for during the university grind. Her advice to those just starting their final year is simple: "What you put in is what you get out." For Lori, the destination is still unwritten, but the joy of designing and creating as a career is exactly where she was always meant to be.
