High-Energy Anthems and Hip-Swinging Swagger: Meeting Suncharmer

From Tesco meal deals to DIY disco balls, the four lads of Suncharmer are carving out a space that is uniquely theirs. Blending the stomp of 70s glam with the sharp wit of modern indie, they are the "Dark Indie" outfit the UK scene didn't know it was missing.

Suncharmer is more than just a band; they are four mates drawn together by circumstance and a shared adoration for the stage. Their sound, a self-described blend of "Dark Indie and Glam Rock," essentially boils down to a high-octane mix of T.Rex and Arctic Monkeys. It is music that manages to be both melodic and high-energy, balancing a "sparkly" aesthetic with a "gloomy" undertone. This unique fusion stems from their appreciation for old-school, care-free bangers and the kind of gut-wrenching emotional anthems that stay with you long after the lights go down.

The band's name carries its own bit of folklore, born in a quiet corner of a pub. Paul was zoned out of a conversation until he overheard a story about a man who owned several unsuccessful racehorses—except for one standout named Suncharmer. That name clicked instantly, providing the perfect moniker for a group that prides itself on its songwriting identity. While they painstakingly construct their tunes to ensure every track feels genuine and original, they aren't afraid to let their personalities shine through; some might even argue that the band's real greatest strength is Paul’s legendary hip-swinging on stage.

Despite their confidence under the spotlights, the group remains refreshingly grounded. Their pre-show routine is far from the glitz of rock-star excess, often involving a frantic trip to Tesco for a meal deal, a quick beer to steady the nerves, or manually blowing up disco ball balloons by the merch stand. While they joke about reaching "diva level"—fantasising about future riders featuring ham sandwiches and magnum bottles of champagne—their current focus is on the camaraderie of the backstage area, where they spend their time making each other laugh until it’s time to perform.

"We haven’t reached diva level yet, but soon we’ll be demanding ham sandwiches and magnum bottles of champagne."

In today’s music landscape, Suncharmer occupies an interesting middle ground. While the scene is currently leaning heavily into a grungy revival or straightforward indie pop, these four lads prefer to lean into their own "silly" energy and swagger. They admit to feeling the occasional insecurity about where they fit in the modern industry, but they view this vulnerability as a catalyst for growth. This resilience was best proven during a "disaster gig" where they arrived to find no sound engineer, no stage, and a confused bar staff. Rather than cancelling, the band clubbed together to build the show from scratch for the fans who had turned up—a moment of pride that defines their work ethic.

"Our latest tune is a strange tale of loneliness and legacy... it’s our darkest work to date."

Looking ahead, the creative engine is humming. Whether a song starts as a collective jam or a riff Josh has been tinkering with, the end result is always something that "breathes" with character. Their latest material is some of their darkest yet—a fuzzy, brooding exploration of loneliness and legacy that signals a bold new chapter. With "favourite tunes" potentially arriving in EP form and big touring plans in the works, Suncharmer is ready to bring their eclectic influences and "hip-swing" energy to the masses.
