1: Allie X - Bitch
I first heard this song in the film Closet Monster as a freshly out of the closet 17 year old and even just the intro of this song still pulls me into this weird feeling I can only describe
as melancholic euphoria. From there, I went into an Allie X deep dive and she completely changed my entire perspective on Pop music and is, in my opinion, one of the greatest
pop songwriters of our gen.
2: Robyn - Missing U
Again, it’s just another song that I needed at 18 and just opened me up to more electronic pop music. It’s such a good anthem and still makes me emotional every time.
3: Kraftwerk - The Roberts
My dad is the reason Kraftwerk is my earliest memory of music and potentially the first group that sparked my interest in having something to do with music at 4 years old. 'The
Robots' was the first song can remember being truly obsessed with and, no joke, It drove my parents insane. Full circle moment was going to see them live with my dad.
4: Madonna - Ray Of Light
Choosing one Madonna song is the reason why this list took two days. But this song is the definitive all rounder Madonna song for me: The production, the vocals, the lyrics, everything! Its also one of the first CDs I bought when I was 11 at a charity shop in Streatham so has a level of nostalgia to it.
5: Joan as policewoman - Warning Bell
I love Joan, her music got me into the world of slightly more alternative jazz and soul but I really like how she’s not confined to just those styles and moves around quite a lot, even into electronic now and then. I saw her live once and I think she’s incredible, her voice is amazing and this is my favourite song of hers.
6: Le Tigre - Deceptacon
Another really early memory of music that my dad put me on to. Its just one of those songs that needs to be on the list because its so centric to my life. Me, my dad and my
sister always said how amazing it would be to see them live and then they did that random reunion tour in 2023 and we went and it was incredible. Also Kathleen Hanna is
badass!
7: Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence
Just hits every time…
8: Santigold - Shove It
Santigold is another example of a completely boundary free artist making whatever she wants, everything she makes is so interesting. I saw her live in 2015 at Latitude festival
and had never heard of her before, but just from her performance of Shove it I was immediately hooked. She also has so many hidden gems like Banshee and High Priestess.
9: Logic1000 - Medium
I do actually think that Logic1000 and this track kicked off my more precise love for Techno and Electro and just general Club music (I’ve never not liked it, but it was never
my main listening). I can’t even remember how I stumbled across this song but I needed to know more. It’s so Electro and mechanical and the looped melodies and drums are so
addictive. I think from there I went further down the rabbit hole, walked through a whole new world and now we’re here. I was also going out A LOT in that period so I guess the
track just aligned with my environment.
10: Jessie Ware - Spotlight
This song came out during covid when there was that slight brief disco resurgence in the early 2020’s in pop music and I think this song was looped for about 2 years for me. The
production is incredible and inspired me quite a bit, and the strings are so well written and they build perfectly over 5 minutes. Jessie ware also another incredible songwriter imo.
