SPOTLIGHT: LUCY DREAM

Lucy Dreams is a dream pop trio hailing from the cultural metropolis of Vienna and consists of David Reiterer and Philipp Prückl. Wait, trio? That is correct because the essence of this band arises from a crystal ball that is seemingly enthroned above all their output. Lucy is an independent system of digital and analogue effects developed by David and Philipp specifically for music production. Lucy can be understood as an A.I. – however, the connection between her and the two musicians of human lineage is far more intimate, as Lucy is deeply involved in the songwriting process.

For Someone That Is Yet To Discover Lucy Dream’s in 5 Words How Would You Describe Yourself?

Machine-led Euphoric dreampop from Vienna.

How is the tour going?

It's always great to be back in the homeland of pop music.

What’s the story behind the name?

When our artificial band member Lucy processes the sounds we feed her, she dreams. Hence Lucy Dreams. With a friendly nod to lucid dreaming.

Where do you feel you fit into the music landscape?

While we always try to conquer lands uncharted, and our influences include David Bowie, Mozart, Deftones,  Mike Oldfield, Talk Talk. We want to compose pulsating beats, unheard melodies, and immersive sounds to lose yourself in. Music that makes people move in excitement and at the same time unwind and relax.

What other artists or bands do you draw inspiration from?

Visual artists, e.g. Esther Stocker, we ended up turning one of her sculptures into sound. Authors Madeleine Miller and Kazuo Ishiguro, their protagonists influence the storytelling of our songs. Musically, at the moment, we love the tunes of Shy Shy Shy, M83, Portland, Roosevelt, Amason, and many more.

What’s currently in the pipeline for the rest of 2023 & 2024 for you?

We’re already planning our UK shows for spring 2024. Also, Lucy’s ideas are too intriguing not to put them into songs. So, we’re excited to also release new material in the coming months.

When I listened the latest single it reminded me of that other Sythn-pop duo Fischerspooner and that whole early 00’s electroclash movement, would you say that has been an influence on you?

This is a very nice reference to make, thanks. I remember a dear friend of mine being a huge fan of Fischerspooner when we were younger, he played it whenever he was DJing. So yes – definitely an influence.

How do differ you from other artists/bands?

We work with an artificial band member.

What can fans expect from your new Single ' Achilles .

A historic milestone, since I’m taking off the mask I’ve been wearing since the inception of the band. This symbolic act of unmasking shall add a personal layer to the song, emphasizing the underlying topic: acceptance of vulnerability and the power of authenticity.

Who would you most like to collaborate with artistically?

Nick Littlemore of Empire of the Sun and PNAU. We’re in touch, I’m waiting for the universe to work its magic.

What was your worst performance?

The past is past where present is.

What was the most difficult obstacle you have ever faced and how did you overcome it?

Myself. Partly overcome through Vipassana meditation.

How does your creative process work – do you think the AI element is a novelty?

The way we write songs relies heavily on the ideas of a machine. And this is exciting, possibilities are almost endless. However, there will always be the need for human creativity and social dynamics for new styles and genres, thus music, to develop.

Is there a hidden meaning in any of your music?

The relentless endorsement of climate protection and peaceful progress.

Who would you like to see Live past or present and why?

Pink Floyd. Why? Pink Floyd.
