New Issue Out Now

WEDNESDAY’S CHILD

Who Are Wednesday’s Child ?

We are a London-based, female-led band experimenting with psychedelic rock, theatrics, poetry, angularity, delicacy… the works!

Tell Me About Your Latest Release!

We’ve spent the past year squeezing in studio and production sessions around our jobs. It’s been very DIY - we engineered a lot of it ourselves at Ten87, and then got the opportunity to record at RAK which was really exciting. The five tracks tell a story about rebirth and reanimation… it’s heavier and darker than anything else we’ve put out. But despite that, we had a lot of fun making it, and that’s what we hear when we listen back.

What Inspired This New Music?

These darker themes are dealing with psychological struggles and confrontations, healing new wounds whilst still mourning old scars… but there is also a lot of hope that comes through in the lighter sections. Everything has a flip side, a sun and a shadow, and this duality runs throughout the lyrics: ‘It can look like leaving to arrive / And feel close, very close / To laughing when I cry’.

What Is Your Favourite Part Of Making Music ?

The wonderful friendships! We all met through music, and didn’t know each other very well before we started playing together. It’s beautiful and strange how close it can make you, to become friends through a commitment to creating things.

What Is Your Biggest Challenge Faced?

Trying to keep our artistic projects sustainable as life in London gets bleaker.

What Advice Would You Give To Aspiring Artists ?

Look after your heads and your hearts, which is easier said than done, but it’s what we remind each other to do. Being kind to yourself and to your friends is an act of artistic resistance!

What Are Your Plans For This Year?

Whilst we were recording the new EP we made the decision to not do as many live performances so that we could focus our energies on the new music. But now that the project is nearing release, we are ready to be gigging more again! Expect bigger shows and surprises…

Song On Repeat Right Now ?

‘Fear, Sex’ by Magdalena Bay, ‘An Echo A Stain’ by Björk, ‘When You Mean It’ by Emma Harner.

Who Has Been Inspiring You Recently, Music Or Otherwise?

We’ve been thinking and talking a lot about Brian Wilson since his passing. During our last band photoshoot we played ‘Pet Sounds’ all the way through and it filled us up with magic. He was touched by something tender, and what he gave to the world was very precious. Georgia and Joel went to a Beach Boys tribute night at the very start of their friendship, and it was the night Georgia asked Joel to join the band!

Where Do You See Your Sound Headed ?

This EP feels like both a departure and an arrival: we had some lineup changes right after the last EP, so this marks a departure from how we used to write together, and an arrival at a creative approach that is more certain of itself… but still… onward! We all want to be making and moving on to the next song, the next show, the next recording. We are writing new music which feels like a change in thinking and feeling, and perhaps isn’t mining the same dark depths as this EP. New hope after a turbulent time of self reckoning!

What Is Your Creative Process When Making Music ?

We’ve developed a way of being flexible in how we approach each new idea. Everyone’s lives are ever-changing, and so we try to listen to how we’re all thinking and feeling, and meet each other wherever we are in the moment. A lot of the lyrical content comes from Georgia, and then we build the arrangements, harmonies and melodic soundscapes together. But, apart from that general framework, our creative process is always evolving.

Who Would You Most Like To Collaborate With Artistically ?

We want to keep collaborating with Morgan Jones who produced one of these songs with us at RAK, and has come onboard to play bass at recent gigs. They have been an amazing collaborator and a very wonderful friend.
