W: Mandy Morgan I: Hailey Heaton

Today marks a significant moment in leftfield pop as True Blue, the ethereal and deeply affecting project of Copenhagen and New York-based polymath Maya Laner, releases her highly anticipated full-length debut, Star Witness. A joint release between Laner's own True Nature and Ending Music, the album is an arresting collection of shapeshifting dance-pop that has been seven years in the making.

From Collaborator to Center Stage

Maya Laner is no stranger to the indie-pop landscape, having established herself as a frequent and sought-after collaborator for some of the genre's biggest names. Her résumé includes a 2023 world tour supporting Caroline Polachek—where she also performed on bass and vocals—as well as close working relationships with Alex G and Porches.

With Star Witness, Laner confidently steps into the full spotlight. The album is a testament to her versatile artistry, encompassing 11 tracks that range from churning, propulsive club-ready numbers to downtempo ballads, all imbued with a sensual, deeply embodied sense of wonder. Laner’s sound is defined by its mix of hypnotic club rhythms, dreamlike textures, and a powerful emotional resonance.

A Constellation of Sound and Collaboration

The album's title, Star Witness, serves as a skeleton key to Laner’s expansive creative world. It speaks to her dual experience: both reckoning with and embodying her witnessed proximity to stardom. By simultaneously shrugging off the weight of industry expectations and unlocking herself to the divine potential of pop music, Laner finds astonishing clarity in her own artistic voice.

Reflecting her keen curatorial eye, the album features an array of collaborators who help shape its diverse soundscape. These include LUCY (Cooper B. Handy), The Dare, Raven Aartsen, and The Bird.

Fans will recognize several acclaimed previously released singles that anchor the record:

  • The vibrant, club-ready track “I Wanna Believe.”
  • The stunning downtempo re-imagining of Cocteau Twins’ “Cherry-Colored Funk.”
  • The LUCY collaboration, Airplane Mode.”
  • Truest Of Blues,” a collaboration with The Bird which was recently accompanied by a music video.

After a string of acclaimed singles and a world tour, True Blue's debut proves to be worth the wait. Star Witness is a deeply affecting, shapeshifting album that firmly establishes Maya Laner as a vital voice in contemporary leftfield dance-pop.

Star Witness is available digitally and via a limited edition run of CDs starting today, October 17, 2025.
