MEET: ZIMMA

W: Jessie Delrivo

Who Is Zimma?

I’m a producer and DJ based in Bristol, specialising in Drum and Bass, and Jungle.

For Someone Who Has Yet To Discover You, How would You Describe Your Sound?

I would say my sound represents the more technical side of drum and bass, with a definite old school but fresh approach to my music. I make music for the heads, but also not so niche that it’s not accessible and enjoyable to all drum and bass fans!

How Did You Get Into The Music Industry And What Inspires You As An Artist?

I first got into the industry by running nights in Falmouth, Cornwall, which is where I was lucky enough to grow up! I met a lovely couple of lads called Jude and Jack, and together we put on events under the name Subfrequency. We had some great headliners down, and we all used to play as the support for the night, so that’s how my journey into DJing first came about!

What Other Music Artists Have Influenced Your Work?

I get a lot of musical influences from Moby, my mum actually played me one of his albums as I left the hospital after being born, so I think his music is somewhat engrained! I also take massive influence from artists such as, Break, Total science, and LTJ. Bukem to name a few.

Who Would You Like To Collaborate With?

I would love to have a day in the studio with Break!

Where Did The Name Zimma Come From?

My surname is Zimmer so it’s taken from that. I am very gassed to have it as a name, so big up mumzy for the generational blessing!

What's Your Greatest Strength As An Artist And What Would You Say Your Weaknesses Are?

My greatest strength i think would have to be sticking to my sound no matter what. I love the music I make and play, and I put so much emotion and love into it. I really can’t see myself playing music I don’t want to to please other people, or make moves quicker, and that’s something I’m really proud of. My biggest weakness is often confidence within myself and my music. I’m surrounded by a group of very talented artists, most of whom have it as their full time career, and whilst this is very helpful, it’s easy to compare yourself and feel like your not doing as well. I am definitely getting better though, and I’m very proud of what I have achieved this year!

What Was Your Highlight Of Boomtown?

Hearing my tracks getting played across the site by artists I’ve looked up to for years! There really is no feeling like it, and it makes me so happy seeing my music get reactions in the crowd, real emotional moments!

Who Were Your Must See's At Boomtown?

My mates Born on road and Carasel opening lions gate on Friday, LTJ Bukem in the hidden woods, Any Jungle In Gals on wrong side of the tracks and Dj Die: It’s to late to turn back now to name a few!

How Would You Rate Your Overall Experience At Boomtown?

10/10, the vibes were DIFFERENT this year! Big up Mair, Stevie, and the rest of the gang for making such a great gaff!

What Advice Would You Give To Aspiring Artists?

Be your self, have fun, and make the art that you love and have a deep passion for. Work hard on your craft, and your flowers will come, no matter how long it takes. “An authentic path may take longer, but the moves and impact are forever legendary.”

What's your favourite tune of all time?

Moby: Porcelain

What Are Your Plans Forb The Rest Of This Year? Where Are You Performing Next?

I’ve got some really exciting releases signed for the coming year, to some labels I’ve been wanting to work with for years! I’m excited for the end of the summer season, so I can get back into the studio and write some more music too. I’m next playing at the Born on road x Wall of bass carnival on the 23rd of August. Hope to see you there!
