The story of Re:O is one of cross-continental evolution, sparked by the vision of founding member Rio Suyama. Originally established as a solo pop project in Japan under the moniker RIØ, the project underwent a radical transformation when Rio moved to the UK. Craving a "heavier and darker" sound, she pivoted from solo pop to a full-throttle alternative metal lineup. Alongside bassist James Wright, drummer James’s ‘Jay’ Stevens, and guitarist Alex Carli, the band rebranded as Re:O—a name suggested by Rio’s brother for its simplicity and searchability—and began carving out a unique niche in the British music landscape.
Musically, Re:O refuses to be pinned down to a single category. Their sound is a kaleidoscopic blend of J-Pop, Dark Pop, and Western-inspired Alternative Metal, heavily infused with cyberpunk and industrial vibes. Drawing influence from titans like Nine Inch Nails, Bad Omens, and Linkin Park, the band creates a sonic experience that is as melodic as it is crushing. Rio describes their identity as a hybrid that thrives on contrast, making them a standout act in a UK scene where Japanese-inspired metal bands remain a rare and exciting find.
