1: Nine Inch Nails – We're In This Together Now
If I could only keep one Nine Inch Nails song, it'd probably be this one. It has everything I love about music in it… it's heavy, emotional, angry and hopeful all at the same time. The way it builds still gives me chills. It reminds me that the best songs don't choose between vulnerability and power, they find a way to be both
2: My Bloody Valentine – Soon
This song completely changed the way I thought about guitars. It's hypnotic, dreamy and strangely physical at the same time. You can get lost in it for six minutes and not notice time passing. It's proof that atmosphere can hit you just as hard as a riff.
3: David Bowie – The Man Who Sold The World
Bowie made being different feel like a superpower. This song has always fascinated me. There's something unsettling and extremely beautiful about it… it has this mystery and darkness running through it that I've always connected with. Every time I come back to it, I find something new. It’s a truly great song.
4: Alice In Chains – Rotten Apple
Nobody did melancholy quite like Alice In Chains. Rotten Apple feels incredibly honest to me. The drum is amazing… not to mention the bass riff, the mood is perfect, and Layne's voice carries so much emotion that you believe every word. It's one of those songs that never loses its impact. By the way… the “Jar Of Flies” EP is a masterpiece
5: Joy Division – Decades
This is probably one of the most important songs I've ever heard. There's a sadness to it but also something strangely uplifting. It feels cinematic and intimate at the same time. Every band that's drawn to atmosphere and emotion owes something to Joy Division whether they realise it or not.
6: Queen Adreena – Pretty Polly
I've always loved artists who aren't afraid to be completely themselves, and QueenAdreena embodied that. Pretty Polly feels dangerous, fragile and theatrical all at once. KatieJane Garside had a way of making everything sound like it was happening right on the edge of falling apart.
7: Massive Attack – Teardrop
This is one of those songs that feels timeless. The production is incredible, but it never overshadows the emotion. Elizabeth Fraser's voice sounds like it's coming from another world. It's haunting without being dark for the sake of it.
8: Radiohead – Where I End And You Begin
Radiohead are masters of tension, and this song is a perfect example. It keeps building and pulling you forward. I love how uneasy it feels without ever losing its sense of melody. For me, the best part is towards the end, when it becomes almost hypnotic. It feels like you're being drawn deeper and deeper into it, and by that point you're completely lost in the song. That's a balance Radiohead have always been brilliant at creating.
9: Depeche Mode – Barrel Of A Gun
I've always loved the tension in this song. It feels raw and intense without ever losing its groove. There's something about the combination of the electronics, the darkness and Dave Gahan's vocal that makes it feel incredibly human. Every element serves the song and that's probably why it still sounds so strong today. One of my favorites.
10: Marilyn Manson – The Dope Show
When this came out it felt like it belonged to another planet. Beyond the shock factor, it's a brilliantly written song about image, fame and society's obsession with celebrity. What always gets me is that bassline and the relentless groove running through the whole track. But for me the real magic is in the chorus… It's huge, memorable and everything in the song just clicks perfectly.
